What is Basic Body Awareness Therapy?
BBAT is a movement awareness training approach exclusive to physiotherapy.
BBAT was inspired by French movement educator and psychotherapist Jacques Dropsy, and was introduced to Swedish physiotherapy by Gertrude Roxendal in the 1970s. BBAT was further developed by an international group of teachers and is now recognized as an established approach to physiotherapy in over 15 countries.
This method is :
- Using structured strategies for individual and group therapeutic contexts.
- Person-centred and health-oriented.
- Has reliable and valid assessment tools.

BBAT considers that constraints, both physical and existential, impact the whole person, influencing movement and daily life.
Consequently, this method offers therapeutic situations based on movements inspired by daily life, performed in lying, sitting, standing positions and while walking. It also includes the use of voice, relational movements and massage.
The aim of the strategies used in therapy is to stimulate postural reflexes, dynamic balance, free breathing and economical, unified movement.

BBAT helps to establish new habits of movement and ways of being, taking into account the physical, physiological, psychological and existential aspects of human existence.
The harmony resulting from the coordination of these elements contributes, among other things, to the regulation of the nervous system.
Who is it for?
The BBAT approach is currently used in a number of clinical fields. Several scientific studies and clinical experiments show that the method can have a positive effect on a number of problems. Here are just a few examples:
- persistent pain,
- fibromyalgia
- pelvic pain,
- stress and anxiety,
- post-traumatic stress disorder,
- etc.

BBAT can also be used for preventive purposes, such as :
- Training work techniques.
- As a tool to counter the effects of stress.
- To prepare for an activity or sport.
- To improve skills in a specific area, such as singing, golf or horse-riding.
The method is therefore suitable for a wide range of people, whether the aim is to restore, maintain or improve health.
The physiotherapist acts as a guide, linking the therapeutic situation to daily life and the patient's needs. BBAT actively involves the patient, so that learning can quickly be transferred to the home, the workplace and everyday life.
